    Four Weddings and a Funeral

Follow The Cops Back Home'的MV看掉了,听歌的时候想起了3个月前的今天,也是周六 -- so young and so gone -- 所有的一切像PPT一样闪过,一辈子至少也要做一次的事情,这就是其中一件吧,很庆幸自己做了正确的决定。

    Funeral Blues

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone, Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone, Silence the pianos and with muffled drum Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come. Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead Scribbling on the sky the message He is Dead. Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves, Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves. He was my North, my South, my East and West, My working week and my Sunday rest, My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song; I thought that love would last forever: I was wrong. The stars are not wanted now; put out every one, Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun, Pour away the ocean and sweep up the woods; For nothing now can ever come to any good. -- W.H. Auden

    1. Nowhere - OST (RMB: 30+5)
        Track 16: suede - trash
    2. Milk - issue: 214 (RMB: 5+5)
        Brett Anderson HK interview

    1. Joanne Leonard - Frontiers Of Photography
        published by Time Life Books
front and back covers of "suede"
    2. suede - A New Morning
        2CD Danish version
    3. Pulp - Different Class
    4. Jarvis - Jarvis

    昨天闲逛,逛到了狗狗同学的blog(当然这是我后来才知道的)

The Good, the Bad, & the Queen - Kingdom of Doom

The Good, the Bad, & the Queen
    Damon

    the Lake House

"i played all the guitars" - Brett Anderson

ok... folks, yes, just so you know , there are veritable balls of strings on the album. those of you who have been paying attention will have heard me say before that the album is characterised by string loops. 'love is dead' wouldn't really exist if it wasn't for the string part. as far as i'm concerned, that loop IS the song pretty much. it was a fucker to get right because it's probably the first song i've ever done with a flat dynamic( except She's Into Fascism i suppose).... i.e the song is woven around a cyclical chord sequence with no big kind of key-change 'here comes the chorus' moment. this means you have to build dymamics into the track with layering and tonal variations rather than relying on the chord progression to do the work. i guess this is pretty much how dance music works but i'm no expert.
b sides sound good to me. one interesting thing about them is that i played all the guitars. it's something i am really enjoying at the moment- sitting by squeeling amps for hours fiddling with tone controls. i just aquired a telecaster and a new classical guitar which i have been wrestling with. there's quite a lot of my naive classical guitar playing on the album . well i like it anyway.

and ahmet pretti... my insatiable one and to the birds were recorded within hours of each other for a b side of the same single. could explain why they have a brother-sister feel.

and while i'm on here, there was a question about Joy Division's She's Lost Control and Can't Get Enough recently...yes.. it more than inspired the drum intro- i think we actually sampled it ( still waiting for the summons) ..

    love etc..Brett

    Midori 说:

    Midori

    Midori

    Midori

    simon?

    Midori

    Midori

    Midori

    Midori

    Midori

    Midori

    Midori

    Midori

    Midori

    Midori

    Midori

    Midori

    Midori

    Midori

    Midori

    Midori

    Midori

    Midori

    Midori

    Midori

    Midori

    Midori

    Midori

    Midori

    而且我知道自己那天看上去多么ugly(我一直都很ugly的)哈哈

    Midori

    Midori

    Midori

    Midori

    Midori

    Midori

    Midori

    Midori

    Midori 说:

    some stuff

alright folks... thought you've all been so lovely recently that you deserve an up- date . tussand tak for all the birthday messages etc. i particularly liked the september 29th song.... nice hippy-dippy vibes that reminded me of a world i never knew... maybe i should have put more pan-pipes on the new record...oh well. not long now till i get to send back my telegram from the queen i guess...

so the album is mixed ( by the lovely Steve Fitzmaurice),mastered( by the superlative Bunt Stafford Clarke) and ready to penetrate your eardrums. i've lived with the songs for so long and i still love them...i suppose that means something. the record will be released early next year on Drowned in Sound records in the UK and a major who i have worked with before ( sorry can't be specific cos we are still dealing lawyers) in the rest of the world.

as i said last time i popped on here, me, Peter saville and Wolfgang Tillmans have been squirreling away at the artwork . we have tried to create something human and vulnerable , delicate and damaged that resonates with the openness and simplicity of the music. the idea is for the sleeve to usher you into my little world . the Tillmans shots were taken in my studio at home with a million reference points dotted around me like little stars. i suppose there's a parralel with that Style Council sleeve- My Favorite Shop (get googling anyone not brought up in the 80's)..

rehearsals haver been going nicely. the band might evolve and change but at the moment we have Fred on keys, Jim Dare on guitar, Bastion on bass( although i have been recently rehearsing with someone you all know well) and Kriss Sonne on drums( incidentally...one of the best drummers i have ever met) .So there you go...cats out of bags and all that. hopefully it won't be too long before you can come along and shout for The Drowners. there will be a couple of bona fide surprises live so watch out and stay focussed.

if this endless waiting is frustrating for you ,imagine what it is like for me. i would dearly love to put the record out tomorrow but i know it wouldn't be the right thing to do. i am having trouble staying sane during this period to be honest so please don't imagine i have ever drifted or that i am anything than 1000 % committed. we're trying to carefully lay the right foundations to support and devellop my work so that i can make albums 2, 3 and beyond so please have patience and faith and know that no decisions about anything to do with this are taken lightly.

    until next time...

    Brett

well i couldn't ignore someone called Bam bam bungalow could i? what's that all about?...although i have to say my fave user name is still the mighty Cheese Is Chewy.

yes, the first album cover was of course originally two girls kissing in a wheel chair. i loved the message which i saw within the image- beauty, equality, sexuality and pride but i guess i surrendered to a nagging voice which told me it could be percieved as patronising and sensationalist. the voice belonged to Saul Galpern who ran Nude records. i think looking back that he was probably right . strangely enough the resultant image , which i originally saw as a compromise , was probably more powerful and direct because of the radical crop and is still one of my favorite sleeves. i think of it as 'the infinite kiss' ... the passion of two lovers frozen for eternity. at the time there was a lot of fuss about it ( fuck- they should have seen the original!). i remember some idiotic right wing group of twats 'supporting family values' or some such nonsense were up in arms about the fact that it portrayed two chicks playing tongue tennis. i hope they choked on their battenburg cake- wankers.

yeah, i seem to remember there was some piece about it in the Mirror and probably various other rags. but as any up on it playa knows, you can't buy that kind of publicity ( not that we particularly courted it, at the time i could have done almost anything and it would have been interpreted as controversial). the truth is, it's a pleasure to wind up those kind of suckers. they're all too busy fussing over the Daily Telegraph cross- word to see what's actually happening. remember, these were the kind of bigoted, myopic clowns who actually believed the kind of crap they read in their Daily Mails. twats.

shit..i seem to have clambered up onto my high horse...i'll dis-mount immeadiately. hello MR. Yo! Blair... no , me and Saul are still good mates and i wish him all the best but i just thought it was time for a 'new team' , as they say at Saatchi and Saatchi. and while i've got your ear, West Ham are a bit shit this season aren't they? still i can't talk, Ipswich lost their last game against Colchester! ha ha

    over and out..x

    Every you, Every me

Bri

    Brian

    Placebo rock Beijing

Placebo played the Beijing Pop Festival in Chao Yang Park, Beijing last Sunday, 9th September. The reaction to the show by the Beijing audience was incredible and even the promoter felt a piece of history was being made!

The band were completely overwhelmed by the reaction of the crowds.

    Brian commented:

"Playing in a new country you never know what to expect, particularly in one whose culture is so different from our own.

The crowd blew our minds with their energy and generosity and the concert remains one of the most enjoyable of the year, if not the whole album campaign"

    other words from Brett:

ok yo blair.. i shall ignore your rather ungenerous critique of me on 'general discussion' cos it's nice to be nice right?..and sometimes life really is too short...

ok, just for you, you cuddly ickle bunny.... the first track on my album is called Love is dead. lots of people have heard a dodgy live version. believe me , it doesn't do the song any justice. i became utterly obsessed with this song, convinced that it was 'the one' and me and Fred ended up recording seven versions in different keys , tempos, feels and with completely different musicians. i couldn't be happier with the way it has finished. for me the recording is now perfect and without doubt one of my favorite things i have ever done, right up there with Wild Ones, Living Dead , Saturday Night etc. i guess there's not really any trickery to the production. it's pretty straight down the line, just capturing the great musicianship of my scandinavian muso-mafia band. i happily stumbled across one of the best drummers i have ever heard who helped inject the song with a groove which was missing from early versions. the electric guitar, a Gibson E335 and a Gretsch Country Gentlmen through a VOX AC30 if memory serves, sits back in deference to the pivotal string hook, adding texture and weight, melody and momentum and the bassline slides and grooves like a bassline should . it was reocrded in a feverishly creative few weeks between december last year and january this year in glamorous Acton and at Mr.Ball's Pink Room Studio in Ladbroke Grove. well, can't really think of anything more i can add. i guess the next stage is for you to hear it and make up your own mind. but whatever anyone else thinks, this song will always be very special to me. it perfectly describes the primal howl of loneliness and frustration that i felt while i was writing it. it was one of those moments for me when i know i hit the target. the last time i got that feeling was when i wrote the words to Trash.

hope that makes you happy. shouldn't be too long till you can hear it...we're still on for january i believe.

oh, and while i am here... if Masami reads this , she should know that the red Gibson 335 she kindly gave mewas used on the recording of this track- a thousand thankyou's- YOU LOVE IT!

well that's it ... for my next trick i will be turning water into wine..

    love and kisses..Brett..xxxxx

    ONEHELLOFABUNCHOFQUESTIONSFORBRETT

Q:In your opinion, are my fears and suspicions unfounded or is Gordon Brown a bigger nob than Tony Blair could ever aspire to be? Do you feel horribly let down by 'New' Labour or was the recent fiasco wholly inevitable? Maybe we should all have seen it coming - any party which appropriates D-REAM's 'Things can only get better' as their campaign song, HAS to be dodgy. The singer sounds like a fourth-rate Jim Kerr, out of puff, in an aerobics class.
A:hi andy... mmm...interesting...dunno if there are any politicians who aren't knobs really( 'show business for ugly people' and all that) but i'll tell you one thing.. i don't think Brown will beat Cameron and i think the Labour Party know that deep down they've got to find someone with the right nicey-nicey - touchy-feely- baby-buggy-dinner-party-friends in crouch -end sort of tosspot if they want to compete at the next big personality contest. brown seems ok i guess but ,horribly unhip as it is to say it- he aint Tony Blair. despite their huge catalogue of fuck-ups i would still rather live in Browns Britain than Camerons Britain(especially when he rips off his mask to reveal Norman Tebbit) but you can see what's happening- the irresponsible Media is bored with new labour and needs a new squeaky toy to bat around. it's what Walter Lippman (look it up) called 'manufacturing consent' and it's very scary.

Q:I've been listening to a bootleg of the Suede ICA shows; wonderful stuff, but my recordings are ruined by my embarrassing and lame attempts to sing along...Given that there was a multi-camera 'crew' at so many gigs (particularly at the final Astoria show) is there any chance that a dvd might surface one day? A 'pick of the ICA shows' would be amazing, especially if it includes 'The Two of us'. I never imagined that Mr Oakes could possibly improve upon the original, but that spacey, infinitely sustained guitar sound compliments the song beautifully. How IS that effect achieved anyway? I believe Johnny Greenwood does something similar on 'Exit Music' (but I may be wrong).
A:Can't really answer your ICA question. i vaguely remermber some plan to release a film and i guess the tapes are sitting in some dusty warehouse to be dug out when Suede become hip again in 2112 and Sony think they can make a buck. to be honest , that whole week was so emotional for me i had to concentrate very hard on holding back the tears. i had dedcided by that point that the beast had to be put out of it's misery. listening to my new record i know it was the right thing to do.

Q:Is Hodgkin a lightweight and trivial painter, or am I missing something?
A:yeah...i don't really get Hodgkin either. i went to the exhibition with Blandine who loves him but just kept thinking that i was in some stupid Brass Eye style tv show where idiots gush about art that it turns out was actually made by monkeys or something. i had to play alot of mental games to see it as anything other than just childish. still love the experience of debating art though. whether i actually like it or not is kind of irrelevant. sometimes it just seems inseperable from philosophy .

Q:And finally...'Imperfections': did it earn you a kiss or a smack in the mouth??
A:... and no, she didn't like Imperfections... why do i fucking bother eh?

    Brett's new Q&A

    Well.....Brett

    Q:Are you here ? - by PopForce
A: well you are in luck POPFORCE...but only cos i dig your name and i have a spare few minutes twiddling my thumbs. i am sitting here in my living room at home waiting for someone to drop round a cd of the mixed album. gonna be mastered next friday ...sounding super-duper. art work is very nearly done. me and that crumpled old pervert Peter Saville and a very famous photographer have come up with something lovely for you all. keep your ears to the ground and your eyes peeled for fun and games happening soon...rehearsing with the band next week... it's only me and the guitar player who aren't Scandinavian....i guess i should learn a bit more than 'tak' really... oh well ...shit, that's the door...gotta go....

Q: savilles associate's means quality. i really liked peter's work on the adicolor exhibition for adidas. he was not the best, but fuck didn't i feel the need of G2 designed hi-tops. given that the mastered cd's recently delivered - did peter hear a demo or is he one of those few ones who just designs without listening and connecting to the emotional context of the music? only phrase you need in swedish: djurgården är fina grabbar från stockholm allihopa, sug på det jävla bajenslödder och solnatattare! - by mattiasbrundin
A: well mattias brundin, since you asked Peter is very opinionated about music...actually he's very opinionated about everything. last time i saw him he sat and talked about town planning in Manchester for an hour and a half before we bothered mentioning anything as predictable as a record sleeve. 'meetings' with Peter involve him swanning down stairs in his legendary dressing gown at about 4pm in a cloud of French cigarette smoke and waffling on about something completely tangential for literally hours. actually we normally just sit and ogle his 'art' books which are really nothing more than thinly disguised porn while he sits and eats his breakfast. If this all makes him sound like a character from an Oscar Wilde play or something then that's because he is. lovely bloke...

Q: hello brett, i was wondering if you have a fave sleeve design among your own records. i've always been really partial to the early suede ones in which you matched an existing photo with a record. the ones for so young and the veruschka one (the drowners?) are particular faves. there was something about that recycling of imagery that kinda went with the band's early image (thrift shop clothes) and the sort of tattered imagery in the song lyrics really perfectly. - by son of backslash, esq.
A:yes Son Of Backslash....' drowners ' sleeve is a personal fave too. i also like the 'infinite kiss' of the debut album and 'head music' is pretty tasty and really under rated as a piece of sleeve-art

Q: Brett.........how are you keeping ur self trim these days...still on the exercise bike? - by Newtime
A:Newtime... i find that furiously masturbating for several hours a day helps keeps off the flab

Q:Brett.....is Fluffington still around.......................?  - by toadyhall
A:yes toady...Mr. F is sitting with me as we speak licking butter off his paws..

Q:Hey, Mr. Brett, I was wondering if you could tell me to "fuck off". Cheers,NC - by NCHaze
A:and yes Haze it would be an honour to tell you to fuck off...

Mods
